Much needed rain relieves Ohio crops

Rain in Ohio brought relief to many areas of the state however pockets of dry weather persisted over the past week. Farmers observed everything from parched ground to standing water, sometimes in the same county.

As of Sunday, 96 percent of the state’s soybeans have emerged, which is above the five-year average of 90 percent, and one percent of soybeans in Ohio have started blooming.

Corn has not begun silking in Ohio yet. The late crop pushed the growth season back a bit but all corn has emerged.

Fifty-four percent of winter wheat is at the mature stage with four percent harvested. Ninety-one percent of alfalfa first cutting hay has been baled along with 85 percent of other first cut hay products.

Eighty-five percent of oats have been headed in Ohio, up from 72 percent on average.
