Spill the Beans contest targets urban youth

Urban youth are the focus of a new video contest highlighting agriculture.

The Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board and University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Animal Sciences are cooperatively sponsoring “Spill the Beans.”

Linda Funk is helping the Board promote the contest and says Wisconsin 4-H and FFA members are encouraged to submit short videos that showcase the importance of farming.

“There’s grades 3-6, we want them to talk about their livestock.  Dairy, poultry, swine, beef, sheep or goat projects and what you’ve learned.  Then the older youth talk about soybeans, and the nutritional importance with livestock.”

The videos need to be two minutes or less and cash prizes will be awarded for winning entries in four different categories.

Funk tells Brownfield that as each generation becomes further removed from the farm, the video contest offers a unique way of sharing ag’s story.

“The real impact is to get urban kids to understand agriculture.  And we’ll have four lucky urban students be able to actually come out to the farms of the winning video makers.”

The contest deadline is July 8th, and video entries may be submitted via YouTube, Dropbox or Google Drive.  Entries can also be submitted by flash drive or DVD.

Videos can be sent to [email protected].
