May pork production hits record

The USDA reports red meat production during May 2016 was up five percent on the year at four billion pounds.

Beef production was up five percent at two billion pounds with a six percent increase in the slaughter and a one pound rise in the average live weight.

Pork production was five percent above a year ago at almost two billion pounds with a five percent increase in the kill and a one pound decline in the average live weight.

Lamb and mutton production gained nine percent on the year.  Veal production was down nine percent.

2016 U.S. red meat production is more than 20 billion pounds, three percent ahead of 2015’s pace.
