ASA fully supports Senate GMO labeling bill

Ron Moore, vice president, American Soybean Association, chaired the ASA policy session in New Orleans, Mar. 5, 2016.

The American Soybean Association (ASA) fully supports the Senate Ag Committee’s compromise GMO labeling bill.

ASA first vice president Ron Moore of Illinois says the legislation is long-overdue.

“We’ve been working on this bill for over a year because it gives certainty to food manufacturing companies, so they don’t have to reformulate everything.  And it stops the Vermont labeling law that’s very obtrusive and stigmatizes a very safe production practice.”

The House passed a voluntary GMO labeling bill last year, and while the Senate version is mandatory, Moore says it gives food companies flexibility.

“From a QR code, on-package label, website or 800 number.  So there’s a whole variety of ways that it can be disclosed.”

Moore tells Brownfield ASA anticipates the bill will be voted on in the Senate next week, and is hopeful that House leadership understands this might be the only way to stop the stigmatization of biotechnology.
