Water quality unites ag and communities

A dairy industry leader says improving water quality starts with collaboration.
Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin Executive Director Shelly Meyer tells Brownfield water quality tours this summer are opening the dialog between agriculture and local communities. “Farmers are doing a lot of really cool innovative things that our municipalities can learn from, and likewise, our farmers have been very interested in learning some of the tips that the municipalities have been utilizing.”
She says improving water quality needs to be a cooperative effort for everyone involved. “Not one of us can do it alone and certainly none of us will get it done if we’re blaming one another, but when we work together—we can do this. We can feed more people and our communities can grow at the same time, we can keep our freshwater fresh.”
Meyer says the water quality tours highlighted edge of field monitoring, cropping techniques, soil science, water use and water treatment facilities.
