The Defense Department appropriations bill passed by the U.S. House includes an amendment blocking any attempt to bring “Meatless Mondays” into the U.S. military.

The Meatless Mondays campaign is an effort by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to reduce overall meat consumption by removing meat from the menu one day each week. HSUS has been working to convince schools, hospitals, the military and other institutions to incorporate Meatless Monday into their foodservice programs.

Nebraska Representative Adrian Smith proposed the amendment to the defense budget bill. It would prohibit the Department of Defense from excluding meat from its foodservice program manual.

An earlier attempt by Iowa Senator Joni Ernst to include similar language in the Senate appropriations bill was unsuccessful.
