Heat wave expands on the central, southern Plains

On the Plains, an early-season heat wave is underway. For the second day in a row, temperatures will reach or exceed 100° across a broad area covering the central and southern Plains. In addition, increasing humidity levels are creating dangerously hot conditions across the east-central and southeastern Plains. Despite the heat, the southern Plains’ winter wheat harvest is advancing northward.

Across the Corn Belt, cool, showery weather lingers across portions of the Great Lakes region, including much of Michigan. In contrast, hot weather continues to build across the southwestern Corn Belt, leading to reductions in topsoil moisture and increasing stress on pastures and summer crops.

In the South, warm, humid weather favors a rapid crop development pace. Scattered showers dot the Southeast, but drought has developed (and more rain is needed) in a broad area centered on the southern Appalachians.

In the West, cool weather prevails across much of California, the Great Basin, and the Northwest. Some precipitation, including high-elevation snow, lingers in the Northwest. Early Thursday, Frost Advisories were in effect in parts of the northern Great Basin, and a Freeze Warning was issued for the Klamath Basin and environs.
