Michigan crops on week four of no rain

drybean-plantingMost Michigan farmers need rain after a month of exceptionally dry conditions. The U.S. Drought Monitor has declared Cass, St. Joseph, Branch, Hillsdale, Menominee and Delta counties abnormally dry.

The Michigan Ag Statistics Office says the state’s corn crop is now 93 percent emerged, just a point ahead of the five year average. Condition remains steady at 69 percent good to excellent.  Soybeans are 95 percent planted, 76 percent emerged, and condition improved a point to 74 percent good to excellent.  Winter wheat is 88 percent headed and condition improved three points to 79 percent good to excellent.

Dry bean planting has surged ahead, now 70 percent completed, 18 percent ahead of average. Sugarbeets are 97 percent emerged, with condition dropping three points to 76 percent good to excellent.  First cutting of alfalfa is 63 percent complete, four percent ahead of last year.

Strawberry harvest continues in the south with smaller berries reported because of dry weather. Asparagus harvest is nearly complete.
