U.S. red meat stocks down 8%, poultry up 4%

The USDA says red meat stocks at the end of April 2016 were down 8% on the year at 1.134 billion pounds, with good consumer and export demand and at least some recent decline in slaughter rates.

Pork came out at 635.424 million pounds, 9% less than last year, and beef was pegged at 452.347 million pounds, 7% lower.

Rising production levels sent poultry stocks to 1.214 billion pounds, 4% above a year ago, with chicken up 5% at 806.108 million and turkey 1% higher at 397.059 million pounds.

Frozen vegetable stocks at 1.852 billion pounds were 8% higher than last year and the highest at the end of April since the data was first recorded in 1962.
