U.S. beef arrives in South Africa

Following a long absence, a shipment of U.S. beef recently arrived in South Africa.

The USDA says the agreement on sanitary barriers and health certificates for U.S. beef was reached after two years of negotiations.

South Africa had been closed to U.S. beef since 2003.

South Africa also recently lifted a ban on U.S. poultry, but imports of U.S. pork have been on hold since 2013.

If all barriers are removed, the USDA says U.S. meat exports to South Africa could be worth $75 million every year.
