More rain on parts of the Plains

Across the Corn Belt, showers and thunderstorms are slowing late-season planting efforts across the upper Midwest. Meanwhile in the eastern Corn Belt, warm, mostly dry conditions are conducive to spring fieldwork operations that until recently have been frequently delayed.

On the Plains, heavy showers and thunderstorms are triggering flash flooding in parts of central and eastern Texas. Farther north, a chilly rain is falling across the central High Plains. Wetness has become a concern across parts of the southern Plains due to disease pressure on winter wheat and fieldwork delays. Only 6% of Texas’ winter wheat had been harvested by May 22, compared to the 5-year average of 10%.

In the South, showers have spread as far east as the Mississippi Delta. In recent days, parts of the mid-South— including northeastern Arkansas—have been especially wet. In contrast, warm, dry weather in the Southeast favors fieldwork and crop development.

In the West, cool, dry weather prevails, except for lingering precipitation in the central Rockies. A Freeze Warning was in effect early Friday in the Klamath Basin of south-central Oregon and northernmost California.
