NCGA disappointed in water bill’s defeat

Barges on the Illinois River at Florence, IllinoisThe National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) is expressing its disappointment with the House of Representative’s failure to pass the Energy and Water Appropriations bill.

NCGA says the House bill is important to farmers who depend on inland waterways systems to export grain and to receive farm inputs like fertilizer for crop production. The group urged House members to find a way to pass the legislation, which NCGA says is needed for “the revitalization of our deteriorating inland waterways infrastructure”.

The bill was defeated by a vote of 305 to 112 after disagreements erupted over an amendment dealing with LGBT rights. The bill also included a rider preventing implementation of the “Waters of the U.S.” (WOTUS) rule, a move opposed by many Democrats and the Obama Administration.
