An active pattern across the Heartland

A very active weather pattern will continue for the next several days across the nation’s mid-section, including large sections of the Plains and upper Midwest. As a result, 5-day rainfall totals could reach 2 to 6 inches from Texas into the upper Mississippi Valley. In addition, heavy showers and locally severe thunderstorms could lead to flash flooding; wind and hail damage; and isolated tornadoes. During the holiday weekend, showers will persist across the Plains and Midwest, while tropical showers may begin to overspread the middle and southern Atlantic States. Elsewhere, cool conditions will linger across much of the West, accompanied by scattered showers across the northern two-thirds of the region.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of above-normal temperatures and precipitation across most of the country. Cooler-than-normal conditions should be limited to the southern High Plains and the Southwest, while drier-than-normal weather will be confined to northern and central California, the Pacific Northwest, and coastal New England.
