A southwest Minnesota farmer finished planting over the weekend.

Paul Simonsen grows corn and soybeans in Renville County and says he is happy to see rain in the forecast this week.

“Most of the farmers (in his area) are finishing up with their planting and would like to see a little bit of moisture on that crop to get it to emerge very well.”

He tells Brownfield most of the corn in his area escaped major frost damage earlier this month.

“In our area there hasn’t been much replanting; there has been a field or two.  But for the most part (the corn) seems to be coming along and is starting to look like it did 10 days ago (when the frost occurred).  I’m looking out the window right now and the corn is actually starting to look green again.”

Simonsen says he spoke to a grower from southeast Minnesota this week who told him frost damage was more extensive in that area because the corn was further along.
