Lawmaker believes Dayton will call for special session

Jeanne Poppe

The Democratic Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) lead on the House Ag Finance Committee says it’s more likely than not Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton will call for a special session.

Representative Jeanne Poppe of Austin tells Brownfield the majority leader in the Senate and the Speaker of the House would like to see that happen after a comprehensive bonding bill failed to pass at the conclusion of the 2016 Legislative Session.

“It’s tough to go into an election campaign season being in the majority when you didn’t get the number one priority for this session done: the bill that does provide money for projects throughout the state.”

She says the Governor will probably be pressured by House and Senate leaders to go back and finish a bonding bill that was almost workable, but fell apart in the final hours of the session.

“He’s going to give it a little bit of time I think, just to make sure that things settle in and that he really can review what was in the bill and make sure it’s the right bill that’s coming forward if and when he calls that special session.”

Poppe says while a comprehensive transportation bill wasn’t completed this session, the bonding bill would include money for transportation projects.
