Rains on the Plains

On the Plains, showers and thunderstorms are maintaining a stormy weather pattern that developed during the weekend. Over time, rainfall has gradually shifted eastward from the High Plains. The wet weather is slowing fieldwork but maintaining generally favorable soil moisture for winter wheat and spring-sown crops. Currently, much cooler air is overspreading Montana, accompanied by a few rain showers.

Across the Corn Belt, showers and thunderstorms are spreading across the upper Midwest, closing a window of opportunity for soybean and late-season corn planting. Meanwhile in the eastern Corn Belt, warm, dry weather favors a gradual acceleration of planting as fields begin to dry out.

In the South, clouds and showers linger across Virginia and southern Florida. Elsewhere, warm, dry weather favors fieldwork, especially in areas—such as portions of the Mississippi Delta and the Tennessee Valley—that have trended dry in recent weeks.

In the West, very cool, mostly dry weather prevails. A Frost Advisory was in effect early Monday in parts of southern Idaho. Precipitation is generally confined to the northern Rockies, where some wet snow is falling.
