A warmer pattern ahead for the Heartland

A cool weather pattern nearly nationwide will be replaced by warm conditions in California and the Northwest. Below-normal temperatures will persist, however, in other areas of the country. Late in the week, another surge of cool air will arrive in the Far West. Widespread storminess will accompany the cool weather regime. Five-day rainfall totals could reach 2 to 4 inches or more from the central and southern Plains to the middle and southern Atlantic States. In contrast, little or no precipitation will occur from the northern Plains to New England. Late in the week, precipitation will accompany the return to cool weather in the Northwest.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of above-normal temperatures in most areas from the Plains to the East Coast, while cooler-than-normal conditions will cover the West. Meanwhile, below-normal precipitation in the southern Rockies and from the lower Great Lakes region into the Northeast will contrast with wetter-than-normal weather across the remainder of the U.S.
