A cold Monday morning in the eastern Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, freeze warnings were in effect early today across much of Ohio, with frost reported in parts of Indiana and Michigan. Monday morning’s low temperatures in Ohio included 31° in Cincinnati and 32° in Columbus—both records for May 16. Producers in freeze-affected areas are monitoring crops such as emerged corn and headed winter wheat for signs of injury. Monday’s cold weather in the eastern Corn Belt follows widespread weekend freezes across the upper Midwest as far south as northern sections of Iowa and Illinois.

On the Plains, a chilly rain is falling in many areas, particularly from Oklahoma to southern South Dakota. During the weekend, freezes were noted as far south as Nebraska.

In the South, heavy rain is causing local flooding along portions of the Texas Gulf coast. Scattered showers dot the remainder of the western and central Gulf Coast States. In contrast, dry weather in the Southeast favors fieldwork, including cotton, peanut, and soybean planting.

In the West, mild weather is returning to some areas along and near the Pacific Coast, including northern California. Cool weather covers the remainder of the region, along with rain and high-elevation snow showers across the central Rockies and Intermountain West.
