Organized rains returning to the Heartland

A Freeze Warning is in effect for Saturday morning in the Dakotas and parts of neighboring states, including northern Nebraska, northwestern Iowa, and western Minnesota. Additional freezes can be expected on Sunday morning, mainly across the upper Midwest. By Monday morning, freezes could affect portions of the Great Lakes region, as well as the interior Northeast and the central Appalachians. Meanwhile, showers will linger in the Northeast through the weekend, followed by a brief period of dry weather. Also during the weekend, a new storm system will arrive in the Northwest. Weekend showers will quickly spread from the Northwest to the central and southern Rockies. By early next week, locally heavy rain will develop across the southern half of the Plains and spread eastward. Five-day rainfall totals could reach 1 to 3 inches or more from the central and southern Plains into the middle and lower Mississippi Valley.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of cooler-than-normal conditions in the West, while near- to above-normal temperatures can be expected from the Plains to the East Coast. Meanwhile, wetter-than-normal weather across most of the U.S., particularly across the South, will contrast with below-normal precipitation in the upper Midwest and Desert Southwest.
