Veterinarians struggling with suicide

Programs ICONThe American Veterinary Medical Association says the rates of suicide and depression are unusually high among U.S. veterinarians.

Dr. Mike Chaddock with Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine tells Brownfield many of the wellness stress levels hit about six months after veterinarians graduate with their degrees.  “About that time is when the first bills come due to start paying back their debt.”

He says veterinary medicine is one of the four professions with the highest rates of suicide.  “It’s a major issue not only at Michigan State, it’s a major issue in our profession and the American Veterinary Medical Association recently has started to address this issue.”

Chaddock says large and small animal veterinarians are coming together to help one another overcome the issue, identify the signs of depression, and provide resources for better work-life balance and wellness.
