Minnesota FFA Star Farmer runs her own business

A project that grew into a business has earned a Minnesota FFA member the Association’s highest honor.

Madison Whitcomb of Litchfield says she’s been involved in the Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City FFA chapter for a few years, and during that time took on a project involving goats that has evolved into something bigger.

“Over the years I’ve worked with pigs, cattle and chickens.  (I’ve also) worked with medication, nutrition and rations.  so my project, over time, has gradually grown into a small business.”

She is responsible for nutrition decisions, medical attention and even bales all of the hay for her animals.

If running her own business before graduating high school wasn’t enough, Whitcomb frequently advocates for agriculture.

“I don’t just use my business to make money, but use (my business) to inform the public and youth on why we do what we do.  Why do we grow animals?  Why is this industry so important?”

She says that’s what set her apart from the competition during the 87th Minnesota FFA Convention in which she took home the Star Farmer Award.

Whitcomb hopes to attend Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota this fall to major in animation and game design, and says her mom is excited to take on more responsibility on the farm when Madison leaves for college.
