Wet spring has central Ohio farmer behind

corn-emerging friend 5-13Cool and damp weather has a central Ohio farmer running a little behind this spring.

Mark Anthony farms southwest of Columbus. “You go north about 10 or 12 miles and there are a lot of farmers that have actually wrapped up,” he says.  “But I have no beans planted at this time and I’d say we’re a little over a third done with corn.”

He tells Brownfield what he’s been able to plant has gone in really well.  “It wasn’t all perfect,” he says.  “I’d say 85 percent planted really, really nice – the other 15 percent was kind of on the heavy side.  Especially when you got into the heavier trash.”

While he’s slightly behind his normal planting pace – Anthony says he’s not making any changes to his planting intentions just yet.  “When we get to the 20th of May – depending on the weather forecast at that time, in my situation – I may consider switching,” he says.

Anthony says more ideal weather conditions are in the forecast for later this week and he’s hopeful that will help him get back in the fields sooner rather than later.
