Smith’s bill would repeal FDA feed directive

cattle feedingA Missouri Congressman who’s from a family of cattle producers says the FDA’s Veterinary Feed Directive is “ridiculous” and an unnecessary burden. Representative Jason Smith has introduced a bill to repeal in the U.S. House to repeal it, “You know, some has predicted to cause 130-thousand hours of added burden on farmers, veterinarians, feed store dealers. It’s just unacceptable.”

Smith tells Brownfield the requirement of a prescription for livestock antibiotic use is an overreach by the current administration and it will ultimately cost producers more time and consumers higher prices for meat. “Our country has lasted for several hundred years without having to have a prescription to give your livestock penicillin.”

And further, Smith says there is a shortage of veterinarians in rural Missouri and throughout rural America.
