Weather delays planting in Michigan

Sugarbeet plantingCold, wet weather brought a halt to planting in Michigan last week. The Michigan Ag Statistics Office says barely three days were suitable for fieldwork as of May 1st.

Corn is eight percent planted in the state, soybeans are at two percent. Sugarbeets have made the most headway with 73 percent of the crop planted, slightly behind last year but almost 30 percent ahead of the five year average.  Oats are 32 percent planted, six percent emerged.  Winter wheat is 35 percent jointed with 72 percent of the crop in good to excellent condition.

Tree fruit development in the northwest has been slow with some growers concerned about frost damage. Southern county fruit crops are progressing ahead of normal.
