Storms slow planting progress
Farmers in Indiana were able to make significant planting progress before storms moved in late in the week. According to the latest weekly crop and weather report 30 percent of the state’s corn crop has been planted compared to 11 percent the week prior. Six percent of soybeans have been planted.
Despite cooler temperatures and excess moisture, the winter wheat conditions remain high as 78 percent of the crop is rated good to excellent. Eighty-one percent of the crop is jointing and 14 percent is headed. Aerial applications have begun on headed wheat to defend against stripe rust and head scab.
Pastures continue to look lush and depending on weather, some hay fields are nearing a first cutting. Seventy-seven percent are rated good to excellent.
Planting for some of the state’s specialty crops, like mint, are also underway.
