Indiana receives avian influenza-free status

turkey farmThe Indiana State Board of Animal Health has lifted the final quarantine associated with the January outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Dubois County.  After logging 90 consecutive days with no new cases of the disease, the state is now declared avian influenza-free.

USDA defines when a state can be declared virus-free, which is 90 days without any new outbreaks after carcass disposal has been completed.  For international trade to be completely restored, BOAH (the board) says the state has to be declared virus-free.

The January avian influenza outbreak resulted in more than 400,000 birds being depopulated.

Indiana ranks 4th nationally in turkey production.
