Grassley: ‘Zero’ chance Congress will pass labeling bill

shopperIowa Senator Chuck Grassley says the odds are “zero” that a GMO labeling bill will make it through Congress before Vermont’s labeling law goes into effect July 1st.

But Grassley says that situation could change if other states pass their own GMO labeling bills.

“I can tell you a process that might bring people to reality on this—it looks like Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maine are going to pass different bills from what Vermont has,” says Grassley. “If these other three states pass different laws than Vermont, it might wake people up to the fact of how impossible it is for national food processors to have different labels for 50 different states. And then maybe we’ll get something done that will be a federal law.”

Grassley is a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
