Minnesota DNR buffer mapping project on schedule

The Minnesota DNR remains on schedule for completing its buffer mapping project this summer.

Dave Leuthe manages the project and says 82 of the 95 drainage authorities in the state are now accounted for.

“Some counties in larger districts have not yet been able to submit us their data.  So the state is mostly done, but there’s still some places where we’re missing some of the data.”

The law establishes new perennial vegetation buffers of up to 50 feet along rivers, streams and ditches.

Leuthe tells Brownfield the DNR is responsible for producing a map of the public waters and public ditches that will require permanent buffers.

He says the project is in the third of four phases and remains on schedule for completion in July.

“The legislation says that landowners have to do this by November 1st of 2017 if they’re on a public water, or November 1st 2018 if they’re on a public ditch system.”

Leuthe says Minnesota landowners can go to the DNR website to view a map that shows whether a buffer is necessary.
