Fieldwork delays in parts of the Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, fieldwork, including corn planting, has been slowed by scattered showers. Currently, most of the rain is falling in the eastern Corn Belt. Prior to the rain, on April 17, Midwestern topsoil moisture surpluses were greatest in Michigan (54% surplus) and Ohio (38%).

On the Plains, dry weather has returned, except for lingering showers and thunderstorms in parts of Texas. Across the northern High Plains, very warm weather is replacing previously cool conditions. Near- to below-normal temperatures prevail across the remainder of the region.

In the South, scattered showers and thunderstorms are occurring from the Mississippi Valley westward. Some lowland flooding persists in the western Gulf Coast region, following the early-week deluge. In contrast, planting activities and other spring fieldwork operations are quickly advancing in the Southeast.

In the West, warm, dry weather continues to promote fieldwork and a rapid crop development pace. In California, 30% of the intended cotton acreage was planted during the week ending April 17.
