The head of a leading equine rescue group says they are pleased an amendment has passed to block the resumption of horse slaughter in the U.S.

Jacque Schultz is director of the equine fund for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), “The House of Representatives Appropriations Committee did vote to continue the de-funding of (USDA horse processing) inspections. So, that really stops any slaughter plants in the U.S.” The vote was close, 25 to 23. Last year, there was a tie vote.

Schultz says this is an important first step and that the ASPCA works daily to protect and improve the lives of horses, “Making sure that we’re providing safe lives for them in every way possible. Whether it’s through our grants program, through our legislative work – whether federally or in local situations.” Schultz says her group gives a million dollars a year in grants to support horse rescue and sanctuary.
