Trade remains top issue for pork producers

Pork producers are in Washington DC this week discussing legislative priorities with lawmakers.

National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) President John Weber, a hog farmer from Dysart, Iowa,  says trade remains the top issue.

“We are very supportive of TPP.  (the Trans Pacific Partnership) is going to be a big deal for America’s pork producers.  If we can achieve the terms that were laid out in the TPP, we will have long-term growth and benefits to the pork industry.”

While NPPC supports the Trans Pacific Partnership, Weber tells Brownfield there are areas of concern, including subsidy programs for Japanese producers.

“We want those subsidies to not incur with each expansion; or basically guarantee a profit, the way that it’s reading.”

And with negative trade rhetoric becoming a large part of the presidential debates, Weber doesn’t expect TPP to be brought up in Congress before a lame duck session.

“We just don’t think Congress is going to touch this issue, so we’ve kind of been laying low.  That’s given us the opportunity to work on these other issues in other countries, as far as implementation of TPP.”

When TPP legislation is introduced in Congress, Weber says NPPC will actively support its passage.
