Mexico partially lifts US poultry import ban

Mexico’s ban on US poultry imports has been partially lifted.  The country will resume importing poultry products from 14 states that it placed a ban on during the avian influenza outbreak last year.  However, the USDA says restrictions still are in place for poultry imports from Indiana due to the avian influenza outbreak earlier this year.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says USDA has helped preserve billions of dollars in US poultry exports by persuading some trading partners to enforce regionalized bans and to rely on internationally accepted science-based standards for trade.

Mexico is important to the US poultry industry, exports to the country in 2015 totaled $1.2 billion.
