Strong market helping turkey industry through avian flu recovery

The director of the Midwest Poultry Federation says positive market factors continue to support the turkey industry while it recovers from last year’s avian influenza outbreak.

Steve Olson tells Brownfield although millions of birds were lost to the highly pathogenic disease, the reality is only about three percent of total U.S. production was impacted.

“(avian flu) Was not a huge market factor for us, it was more (about) good prices.  Prices have been good and were good last year.  But it was one of those cycles as we compete with other proteins where prices were good.”

He says there are some unknowns when looking at the longer-term market impact of the outbreak.

“We’ll see how things play out over the next couple of years as we get back into line (with production), sometimes we tend to expand or increase production and then (the market) has a drop-off.”

He says demand for turkey is expected to remain high, and should keep prices competitive with other proteins through this year and beyond.

Brownfield spoke to Olson at the Midwest Poultry Federation Convention in St. Paul last week.
