Missouri dairy producers ‘pleased and hopeful’

MDAHeader3The head of the Missouri Dairy Association says they’re pleased the Missouri House passed a budget with help for the state’s dairy farmers, “We’re really pleased that the House of Representatives here in the Missouri General Assembly has approved their version of the state budget which would include funding for our Dairy Revitalization Act. They approved the same figure that Governor Nixon had proposed in his budget of $1.325 Million.” That budget is awaiting Senate action. Dave Drennan says a key part of the law will reimburse the state’s dairy farmers for the federal Margin Protection Program premiums.

Meanwhile, Drennan tells Brownfield Ag News that dairy producers are hopeful for a good summer, “We just hope we have good weather here. That we have good crops. And, you know, a key here in Missouri is that we’ve got good grass. That’ll help our dairies survive this downturn in milk prices, I think, or give them a little bit of an edge.” And, he says dairy producers are looking to raise more heifers to sell for extra income.

Brownfield interviewed Drennan at the 3rd Annual Abner Womack Missouri Agriculture Outlook Conference.
