GMO labeling bill headed to Senate

Top Story Icon

The Senate will markup Ag Committee Chairman Pat Roberts’ Biotechnology Labeling Bill today.  The bill would provide incentive for food companies to give consumers more information on biotechnology in food.

The bill would also prevent patchwork state GMO labeling laws from taking effect and create a voluntary national standard for GMO labeling of food.  Substitute language in the bill would incentivize food companies to provide more information voluntarily, if they do not provide significant information voluntarily after several years it would trigger a mandatory labeling program.  The language is similar to an ammendment submitted by Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly.  Roberts says food companies would have adequate time to utilize a variety of options to disclose information to consumers.

Senator Roberts says he’s worked with both Republican and Democrat colleagues to find a balance between consumers’ right to know and ensuring a level playing field in the marketplace.

The Senate could vote on the legislation as early as Wednesday.

  • Why would I get a phone call to ask my senator to vote against this bill.
Saying it would increase my food bill by $1,000 is bogus. The people need the information to know what is being put in the food we eat.
