Michigan FFA members receiving college credit

Randy Showerman

The number of FFA members receiving credit from Michigan State University has increased by 50 percent since last year’s announcement of the university offering six credit hours to students that earned their Michigan FFA state degrees.

State FFA Advisor Dr. Randy Showerman tells Brownfield there are more opportunities for young people to learn about agriculture that are leading to future careers in the industry.  “When we look at what’s projected for this coming year, we’re looking at an increase of students that are applying into the four-year degree programs as well as within the Institute of Ag Technology.”

Showerman says the credit value is worth at least $4,000, plus cost of living savings.  “For some of the students, that can be a make or break situation.”  He says, “If they take that six credits plus scholarships that they would receive their first year, many of those students are going to be able to come to Michigan State that first year with having most of their tuition covered.”

Showerman says enrollment in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at MSU is the highest since the mid-1970s.
