Iowa farmer plants cover crops ‘to improve the quality of the soil on my farm’

DSCN2184Roger Zylstra got involved with the National Corn Growers Soil Health Partnership because “I thought that it would be a good opportunity to help learn about conservation, about soil health and to improve the quality of the soil on my farm,” Zylstra told Brownfield Ag News at Commodity Classic in New Orleans.

When Zylstra sold his milk cows several years ago he quit growing hay.  That’s the reason that he began putting down winter rye as a cover crop.  “I thought that the diversity of an additional crop would maybe help improve my soil tilth,” he said.  This is only the second year that he’s planted the cover crops, but even at this early stage, “we’re very pleased with the results,” said Zylstra, “we think we’re on the right track.”
