GMO labeling on the Hill
Lawmakers will begin to square off next week on a GMO labeling approach. Kansas Senator Pat Roberts’ voluntary GMO labeling bill will be in front of the Senate Agriculture Committee next Tuesday. It has the support of many in agriculture. Ranking member Debbie Stabenow reportedly favors a mandatory label with a two year moratorium on state laws. There’s word that might become part of a compromise.
The Vermont GMO labeling law set to go into effect this summer has been defended by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who’s seeking the Democratic presidential nomination. He says he’s proud of Vermont for leading the way and that all states must be allowed to label GMOs.
If allowed to go into effect, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack said this week that Vermont’s law would create chaos and that Congress needs to make sure it doesn’t.
