Spring-like warmth builds across much of the Plains

On the Plains, mild, breezy weather prevails. The region’s winter wheat production areas remain devoid of snow, and the crop has begun to lose winter hardiness due to ongoing warmth. In addition, short-term dryness has become a concern across portions of the southern Plains.

Across the Corn Belt, cool weather lingers, accompanied by a snow showers in the vicinity of the Great Lakes. A variable snow cover exists across the Corn Belt, although significant depths are confined to the upper Midwest.

In the South, developing dryness in the western Gulf Coast region contrasts with abundant soil moisture reserves in much of the Southeast. Currently, cool, dry weather prevails through the South.

In the West, warm, mostly dry weather continues, although few showers are developing along the Pacific Coast in advance of an approaching storm. Due to a 2-week dry spell, the average water content of the Sierra Nevada snowpack has remained steady at 20 inches—and stands at about 90% of the mid-February normal.
