Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans receive approval

Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans have been approved for growers. A Monsanto representative says Chinese import approval was the missing piece in getting their latest seed technology to farmers in 2016.

“So once that was approved and obtained it really opened the door for us to move forward commercially with Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans,” said Miriam Paris, U.S. Soybean Marketing Manager for Monsanto.

Paris says they’ve been developing these soybeans for the past eight years.

“And we’ve invested all of our time and efforts and innovations into Roundup Ready 2 Xtend,” said Paris. “So these are truly the newest, elite genetics.”

For farmers in 2016, she says the emphasis will be on performance.

“Growers will have the opportunity to test Roundup Ready 2 Xtend on their farms in 2016 and experience some of our innovations and breeding,” Paris said.

Roundup Ready 2 Xtend technology provides agronomic traits including resistance to nematodes and phytophthora root rot.

Although Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans are tolerant to both glyphosate and dicamba herbicides, the use of dicamba herbicide applied over the top is not currently approved by the EPA.

“We are in the final stages of review for that process and approval and we anticipate to see a milestone here in the near future,” said Paris.
