The National Chicken Council says it should be able to predict the winner of the Super Bowl this weekend if typical chicken wing consumption is any indicator.

Tom Super says cities with higher wing consumption in four of the past five years have become Super Bowl champions.  “If it went strictly by wing sales, we think that the Panthers are going to beat the Broncos this weekend because folks in Charlotte out eat those in Denver for chicken wings by a three to one pace.”

Super tells Brownfield chicken wing consumption peaks during the week of the Super Bowl.  “We’re predicting about 1.3 billion chicken wings would be eaten this weekend as folks watch the Panthers and the Broncos in Super Bowl 50.”

He says chicken wing prices are down about 20 cents a pound compared to last year, with supplies 2-3 percent higher.

The council says three-quarters of wing sales will come from food service outlets and the rest will come from grocery retail stores.
