Science of Ag Challenge participation doubles

Bev Durgan

The Dean of Extension at the University of Minnesota says participation in the 4H Science of Ag Challenge has more than doubled in the past year.

Bev Durgan tells Brownfield the program is geared towards teenagers interested in science.

“It’s a team of three to five 4H’ers looking at their community, identifying an issue, and then the challenge is coming up with a solution to that.”

There were 12 entries in the 2015 contest and so far this year there are more than 30.

Durgan says a unique aspect to the Challenge is how it partners students with mentors.

“So somebody that’s working in that area to come talk to them.  So it’s really about connecting those students to people that are working in agriculture and building that relationship.”

She says winners receive scholarships and teams can enter as many projects as they want.

Brownfield spoke to Durgan at the 2016 Minnesota Ag Expo.
