Meat export opportunities in Africa

Minn. Soybean Growers President Bruce Schmoll at Commodity Classic, Kissimmee, Fla., Feb. 27, 2013.

The chairman-elect of the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) says there are current and future opportunities for trade in Africa.

Bruce Schmoll, a corn and soybean producer from southeast Minnesota, tells Brownfield USMEF recently conducted a study on the Sub-Saharan region of Africa.

“The population is expected to grow significantly.  There is a demand for specialty-type products that we don’t see in the U.S. so much, so we need to understand what their market is.”

He says the study also took into account the financial aspects of the region.

“You want to make sure that you’re going into a market that can afford to buy your product, and there’s some questions about the black market and is credit available.  What’s the infrastructure?  Do they have cold storage and those sorts of things?”

Schmoll says the African market isn’t a high priority for meat exports now, but USMEF anticipates the continent eventually will be as the population is expected to double by 2050.

Brownfield spoke with Schmoll at the 2016 Minnesota Ag Expo.
