Flinchbaugh: Kasich, Clinton best suited for agriculture

DSCN1497A veteran farm policy pundit says there are presidential hopefuls from both parties that could bode well for agriculture.  Barry Flinchbaugh remembers presidential elections as far back as 1948, but he says the one coming up in November stands out.

“This one defies all logic; crazy, very hard to predict,” said the Kansas State University Agriculture Economics Professor in an interview with Brownfield Ag News Thursday.  “The public’s mad and they have a right to be mad.”

Speaking at the Wisconsin Corn and Soy Expo with Washington policy analyst Jim Weisemeyer of Informa Economics, Flinchbaugh said that on the Republican side, Ohio Governor John Kasich knows agriculture and governs an agriculture state.

“There’s some experience there and some talent there,” added Flinchbaugh, referring to Kasich and to his agricultural background.  “Now, on the other [Democratic] side, Mrs. Clinton, when she ran for re-election to the New York Senate, she had agriculture support, including the Farm Bureau, because she paid attention to agriculture.”

Hillary Clinton has been pro-trade “until now [opposing] this Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, but that’s pure politics,” said Flinchbaugh.  “She needs to be really taken to task for that, and I’m sure Bill [Clinton] has done that because he’s been a completely open trader.”

Flinchbaugh says running mates that would strengthen either ticket are Republican Senator Marco Rubio and Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper of Colorado.
