Blizzard conditions across parts of the northern, western Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, heavy, wet snow is falling over the western third of the region, where Blizzard Warnings are in effect for Tuesday. In contrast, spring-like warmth is overspreading the Ohio Valley and southern Corn Belt.

On the Plains, a potent winter storm is producing wind-swept snow in central and northern portions of the region. Cooler weather is returning to Oklahoma and Texas following recent 80-degree warmth, though the cold air arrived with little rain; consequently, short-term dryness is on the increase over the southern Plains.

In the South, unseasonably warm weather favors the growth of cool-season pastures, though the warmth is also setting the stage for potentially severe thunderstorms later today from the Delta into the Southeast.

In the West, mostly dry weather has briefly returned following yesterday’s winter storm. While recent rain and mountain snow have benefited pastures and spring runoff prospects, the impacts of long-term drought linger in the form of still-low reservoirs and depleted groundwater reserves.
