Sheep, lamb inventory up, goats down

Programs ICON

The U.S. sheep and lamb inventory increased last year.

As of January 1st, the total of 5.320 million head was up 1% from a year ago, including a 1% rise in the breeding herd and a 1% increase in the market inventory. The lamb crop was unchanged at 3.44 million head

2015 U.S. wool production topped 27 million pounds, 1% above a year ago, and the value of $39.3 million dollars was $400,000 more than in 2015.

The goat inventory was down 1% at 2.6 million head, with the breeding and market categories both also down 1%.  The U.S. kid crop declined 2% to 1.7 million head. By type, meat goats were 2.1 million head, 1% lower, and milk goats were 375,000 head, up 3%.

  • Raising goats can be an adventure. Watching them interact and do their goat stuff is quite a riot. P.S. I found a really neat new website that helps local farmers and homesteaders sell their products to the community. Anyone heard of FIFY? (Farm It For You)
