Growmark launches sustainability initiative

The director of agronomy marketing at Growmark says its new sustainability initiative stands on three pillars.

Ron Milby tells Brownfield the Endure program takes into account the social and environmental aspects of sustainability, but really focuses on the economic component.

“That really aligns with our mission statement of improving the long-term profitability of our member-owners.  And if you look at the word sustain, to us that (means) something that would be enduring over time.”

The cooperative looked at best-management practices that have kept farmers profitable and Milby says precision ag is a system that’s enhanced the profitability and sustainability of agriculture for more than 20 years.

“Think of VRT (variable rate technology) application, think of taking soil samples, and apply fertilizer where it’s necessary and keeping it off of where it’s not necessary.  That’s a sustainable practice.”

Nitrogen management, bee health and crop specialist advocacy are other priorities for Growmark’s Endure campaign that Milby says is moving forward.

“The Endure advocate program is something we’re launching this year.  The pollinator program is something we’re launching this year.  Some of the training is being launched this year, and other programs will come about.”

Growmark, which owns the FS trademark, operates in 40 states providing agronomy, energy, grain marketing and risk management services to its member cooperatives.
