Behind the Scenes

Talking ag with local ninth graders

012716ShannonSimonsenToday I had the opportunity to speak to a group of students at Simonsen Ninth Grade Center in Jefferson City, MO. I presented to a group of about 35 students who belonged to the Ag, Food and Natural Resources (AFNR) Academy.

Students at Simonsen and Jefferson City High School are asked to select an academy to join as their emphasis for all four years of high school. The AFNR Academy is one of seven the ninth graders can choose from. This program also works closely with the FFA program and is geared to prepare them in selecting an ag-based major in college.

I shared with these students about how I am an alumna of Simonsen and their ag program. Although my high school diploma doesn’t say Jefferson City High School, I attended these schools for four years and completed the same agriculture classes that they will take but only as a sending school student. The opportunity to do this was one of the most important experiences of my life.

I stressed the importance of organizational involvement and leadership development on both a high school and collegiate level. These organizations created a smooth path in receiving my diploma from the University of Missouri and joining the Brownfield staff as the Digital Products Coordinator. I also shared about my duties and responsibilities in my position and gave an overview of the opportunities in ag that relate to journalism and communications.

Thanks to Simonsen and the AFNR Academy for having me!
