Milder weather on the Plains

Across the Corn Belt, mostly cloudy but otherwise tranquil weather prevails. However, a few snow showers are occurring in the vicinity of the Great Lakes. Most of the region’s remaining snow cover is confined to the upper Midwest.

On the Plains, mild, dry weather continues to erode winter wheat’s protective snow cover. In fact, snow is rapidly disappearing from the northern High Plains, where mild, windy weather prevails.

In the South, scattered rain showers are occurring along the Gulf Coast and in the southern Atlantic States. Storm clean-up and recovery efforts from the January 22-23 blizzard continue in portions of the southern Mid-Atlantic region due to heavy snow at inland locations and beach erosion along the coast.

In the West, dry weather prevails in most areas. However, mild, showery weather is arriving in the Pacific Northwest in conjunction with an approaching storm system. The average water content of the high-elevation Sierra Nevada snowpack has climbed to 19 inches, two-thirds of the typical accumulation by April 1.
