Nutrition bill expands school lunch program

Senator Sherrod Brown_Roundtable_Champaign Co_090115 (5)_webThe nutrition bill passed by the Senate Agriculture Committee on Wednesday expands the school lunch program.

Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown introduced a provision in the bill that ensures children will get nutritious meals during the summer.

“Only about one-sixth of children in the free and reduced lunch program, whether it’s in a city, a suburb, or a small town, or rural area, only about one-sixth of them are in a summer feeding program,” Brown said. “Those kids are eating as well in the summer and part of our bill is to help that.”

Brown says the bipartisan bill also supports working families by reducing administrative paperwork, helps school districts upgrade equipment to encourage the use of more fresh ingredients and directs new resources to expand the National Farm to School program. The bill now goes to the full Senate.
